Could Lyme Disease Be Causing All Your Chronic Health Issues? Find Out With This Six-minute Lyme Questionnaire.

Essential Oils For Oral HygieneHow much thought do you put into oral hygiene? Are you a quick-brush-with-the-Colgate type of person, or a regimented twice-a-day-floss-and-mouthwash type? Do you use fluoride or no fluoride? Do your kids brush their teeth every single day (confession: mine doesn’t)? Did you know you can use essential oils for oral hygiene too? There are some extremely simple ways to do that, too, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

The mouth can be such a determinant of health – hidden infections and cavitations can have massive impacts on the heart and on the whole body; and amalgam fillings, crowns, bridges etc introduce certain metals into the mouth that may have negative effects on the body. Those things require more detailed investigation and professional intervention – biological dentistry serves to help people identify and correct anything in the mouth that could be contributing to problems. Functional medicine docs are trained to test for things like mercury levels and address that.

What I would like to suggest is just some simple every day interventions that can make a huge difference to tooth and gum health over time.

1. OnGuard toothpaste and clove essential oil

This plan is about as simple as it gets. DoTERRA makes an all-natural toothpaste that contains OnGuard, it’s immune-supporting, germ-fighting blend.

Then, when you brush, add 1 drop of clove on your toothpaste. Clove is highly antimicrobial, and it’s also a major antioxidant. It might feel wierd and tingly at first, but it’ll help with gum health and oral health overall. (Clove is also used for toothaches because it has numbing properties.)

2. DIY mouthwash

Stepping it up a notch you can make your own mouthwash.  Here’s a simple recipe –

  • 5 drops melaleuca
  • 5 drops peppermint
  • 3 drops clove
  • 2 drops cinnamon
  • 2 drops myrrh

Combine in a 4-ounce glass bottle. Fill remainder with purified water. Make sure to shake before each use to help disperse the oils.

Simple, right? These 3 things – the OnGuard toothpaste, drop of clove, and healthy mouthwash – will take just minutes a day, but I bet your dentist will be asking you what you’re doing differently!
